Black History Month

Updated: Feb 9, 2021

It’s Black History Month! While the lives and history of the black community ALWAYS matter, we at Shark OFF are excited to dive in, learn, and amplify Black voices even more month.

There are so many amazing, Black-created resources if you want to learn about the incredible people who have shaped our country and our world. The Zinn Education Project is one of my absolute favorite sites, highlighting events and people that our public school education programs may not have featured with the emphasis they all deserve. Check out this article as well for more badass black Americans!

If we have learned anything from the past year of civil activism, protests, bail funds, wrongful arrests, racism, and radicalization, it is that NOW is the time to be heard and make change. As a white person writing this blog, I know that it is my job not to be heard, but to use my privilege to amplify and lift up the voices of the oppressed, and to educate myself like crazy. Now is the time to ask ourselves, “Whose story does our history book tell? What other versions of this American story do we need to include, reframe or magnify?”. (Quoted from this article that takes you through the do’s and don'ts of BHM.)

Tell us how you are going to celebrate this month! We would love to hear your ideas on how we can use this platform to spread joy and celebration to our Black community.

We can’t wait to buckle down and read, learn, love, and grow this month and every month following!
